#10. There are treasures in the darkness.

Every year on my birthday, I like to take some moments to reflect upon lessons learned from the previous year and set goals for the coming age. This year, as I begin my next trip around the sun, I felt called to reflect upon my journey thus far, and the wisdom gained collectively. Here’s what I uncovered.

1. Change can be a good thing.

In fact, it’s always a good thing. We just don’t know it yet.

2. What we fear holds that which we seek.

Dive deep into your fears and you will find everything you are searching for. They are there for a reason.

3. Pain can be our greatest friend if we let it.

It’s human nature to want to avoid pain, to escape…

How often do you allow yourself to simply be?

How often do you allow yourself to be? No phones. No computers or iPads. No TV. No chores or busywork. Free of all things that take you away from the awareness of your self. In a world that relishes productivity, doing nothing seems almost impossible, making it even more vital to our well-being and mental health. In fact, this idea of Niksen, which literally means “to do nothing,” is practiced by the Dutch often, and is now being recommended by health professionals to reduce burnout and combat stress.

So how exactly does one do nothing? The key to Niksen is…

Growing up in an Indian household, herbal remedies were abundant, and more often than not, the only medicine we used to heal ourselves of minor ailments. Whether it was an upset stomach, bloating, gas, cramps, or even a cold, my grandmother and mother had a remedy for everything. And the best part is, they actually work!

Here are 5 herbal remedies I always travel with, which I carry with me in small reusable pouches:

Mint

Both of my moms grow a plethora of mint in their summer gardens, so at the end of the season they dry and crush them to…

Skin Absorption 101

How many products do you use daily? Shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, cream, lotion, lip balm, toothpaste, sunscreen? According to a survey of 2300 individuals conducted by the Environmental Working Group, the average person uses 9 products daily, which contain 126 unique ingredients, with some people using as many as 15 products on their skin daily without a second thought.

This wouldn’t be so concerning if the ingredients in our cosmetics were actually regulated. You heard me: safety tests are not required for the cosmetic industry. …

And how to put them into practice.

“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” ~ Bruce Lee

Water is the most adaptable substance in the world. And if you observe it closely, you might learn the secrets to living a peaceful life! Here are 5 powerful lessons I’ve learned from observing water and how you can put them into practice:

1. Let Go!

Water doesn’t…

What 5% of your time can do for you

Why is it that the things that become the greatest obstacles for us are actually the least draining of our time and energy? According to recent consumer reports, we spend over 4 hours on our phoneswith 50% of that time being spent on social media, messaging, and entertainment apps — and over 3 hours watching TV a day. That’s almost 30% of our day and 45% of our waking hours! And typically, these activities are the reason we don’t have time to do the things that truly enhance our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

Exactly how much of…

Why you need to detox your pits today

SWEAT IS YOUR FRIEND

Sweating is good for you! How it ever became popular to market stopping one of the most vital detoxification systems our body has is a mystery to me, and frankly, quite absurd! Sweating is our body’s natural way of eliminating harmful toxins that build up over time. This is important for proper immune function and preventing diseases caused by toxic overload. By trying to prevent this much-needed cleansing process, we are causing our bodies much more harm than good.

When we try to stop our bodies from sweating, we allow our pores and sweat glands to clog, trapping harmful bacteria…

Everyone’s always searching for the “get healthy fast” schemes. We want everything fast, effortless, and easy. If only it were that simple, right?! I wish I could tell you that living a healthy lifestyle comes quickly or easily. But it takes practice, learning, patience, and time. Though many of us might not be able to allocate as much time as we would like to our overall health and wellbeing, that doesn’t mean that we can’t start. After all, we have to begin somewhere!

While you’ve probably heard these strategies before, here are my top 5 actions to help kickstart a…

I like to sit in deep reflection every opportunity I can find. I spent my childhood with my head in the clouds, daydreaming about all of the things that I desired, thinking about who I was and hoped to be, taking endless quizzes in the hopes of discovering unknown parts of me, and ruminating in my room for hours about the world and life in general. It is this habit that drew me to journaling and meditation at a young age, as well as the key to my growth year after year.

With the coronavirus upon us and cities in…
